Perhaps the flat lands of Illinois and my desire to visit the mountains
are the reason I got into long distance endurance motorcycle riding.
Somewhere along the road I figured I could spend a few days riding to
Colorado and then have no time to enjoy it, or I could just cruise the
1,019 miles between me and the mountains in 16 hours and have time to
enjoy riding twisty roads. Its no wonder my motto is, So Many Miles, So Little
Time - that's probably why I am president of the Iron Butt
Association. Riding is my life. Along the way, I have been lucky enough
to set several Guinness Book of World Records including
New York to San Francisco in 47 hours and 41 minutes,
the 24 hour record with 1,707 miles and riding a motorcycle to all
48 contiguous states in 6 days, 13 hours and 21 minutes. I'm happy to say
that I'm not in the record books anymore, all these records have been beaten
by some great riders. New York to San Francisco has gone to Ken Hatton
with 41 hours while Ron Ayres did 48 states in a record 6 days flat!
Boring life stuff:
- BMW Ad Ah, the good old days! Nothing
but ride, ride, ride! Why does life have to be so complicated now! 230k! Long load times!
- Ron Ayres Against the Wind What is this Iron Butt thing all about? Ron's book tries to explain it!
- More coming, select slides from motorcycle rides in New Zealand, Turkey, Australia and Norway!
Stuff you just don't know where to file!:
My favorite book is The New Roadside America by Mike Wilkins,
Ken Smith and Doug Dirby. If you like odd places to visit and
some unique Americana, this is the book to get a hold of.
Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged is THE book to read. A study on Capitalism
and why governments and do-gooders fail....
My reading and mail list favorites no doubt show my true colors, if it
is odd, I probably love it! Some of my odd favorites are:
- I am still trying to figure out why Why, Arizona is named Why?
Why is Whynot, Mississippi called Whynot? Are their natural enemies the
population of Why, Arizona?
- Did you know that Booger Hollow, Arkansas has a population of 7 including
1 coon dog or that Fallbrook, California is the Avocado Capitol of the
World?
- Did you know that Florida has the nations highest record of lighting
deaths killing an average of 10 people per year. According to one of my
friends, an expert at trivia like this, "Florida has the most people killed
by lightening because of the large number of golf courses. I've always
felt the dangers of golf were vastly underrated."
- Did you know that you can purchase pineapple toothpaste in Lake Placid, Florida?
- Do you care that the first Capitol of Illinois is now sitting under 30 feet
of water in the middle of the Mississippi river? And in Metropolis, Illinois
is what else, but a statue of Superman.
- Chicago, my hometown, has countless interesting places. Besides visiting
the Sears Tower (the World's Tallest building which is no longer owned by
Sears of course and due to a weird twist in the way buildings are measured,
is indeed still taller than any other building, but can no longer carry the
title World's Tallest because a designer wanted to build a taller
building, it came up short and they added some spires to it. So you might
think, heck, Sears can do that, but they can't because the original design
did not call for spires and adding them would not count toward making the
building taller - you follow all that? I sure don't but a bunch of suits
with nothing else to do flew around the world a few time to figure this out and
to add insult to injury, probably got paid big bucks to do so!).
- In Chicago you can also visit to the World's only
Radioactive Waste Dump that is open to the public which houses parts
from the first nuclear reactor. But that site pales in comparison to
a visit at the Chicago Holography Museum (312/226-1007) or even more
exciting is a stop by the very first McDonalds restaurant (which is now
really a kind of museum) in Des Plaines (a Chicago suburb).
My goals
- Drink a cup of coffee in Hot Coffee, Mississippi.
- Visit the North Pole by motorcycle
- Visit the World's largest steer in Kokomo, Indiana who fell on ice in 1910
and was promptly stuffed - all 4,270 pounds of him.
- Before it is to late and the lawyers get it all, I want to stop by
Eldon, Iowa and eat in Roseanne and Tom's Big Food Diner and after lunch
ride over to Riverside to visit the future birthplace of James Kirk.
- Take a plane flight over the Largest Whirlpool in the Western Hemisphere
near Eastport, Maine
- Get to Rachel, Nevada on a Wednesday night for the weekly UFO watch
and then hike over
the hill with the locals to spy on Secret Area 51 - you know the place that
the government says does not exist. Of course, not everyone belives the
government, like a crafty lawyer that used Russian spy photos to prove Area 51's
existence as part of an injury suit that the government contends
could not have happened because Area 51 does not exist...
- A visit to the Elvis is still Alive! museum in Wright City, Missouri
and to top it off, jump on a plane for Jerusalem to visit the Worlds
Largest Elvis Statue at the Elvis Inn (located on the Jerusleum-Tel Aviv
Highway route #728 for the curious).
- My ultimate goal is to visit Tristan DaCunha - often referred to as
the place as far from civilization as you can get. The island is 2,300
miles from South America and 1,700 miles from the southern tip of Africa.
They don't get a lot of visitors out there, so moteling it is not an option.
- Thank's to Bob Davis
a new addition to my list of places to visit is Zeke's, Washington.
According to Bob, Zeke's has a population 7, at last that how big the
town was when Bob visited some years ago. Turns out ol' Zeke is the
Mayor, Fire Marshall, Police Chief, and he makes a mean burger.
Zeke's is on Steven's Pass just West of the Cascade mountains, on
the eastbound side.
Places I will probably avoid or least be extra careful while visiting!
- Komodo Island, Indonesia; The Komodo Dragon likes to eat people.
I'm told it is best to avoid dry places and watch for signs of attack
which include inflation of the Komodo's neck and body... According to
Tom Mellown, the Komodo dragon
will actually dig up a freshly buried grave for food.
- Borneo; Wagler's Palm Viper. The venom of the "five-pace snake"
is said to kill after five blood circulating steps... sounds like a
place for a family vacation, doesn't it?
Chicago property for Sale! Rare 50 by 124 foot lot in northwest Chicago for Sale!
I am always looking for neat places to visit, if you know of any, please
